Card Game: Min Hwa-tu

by connal on January 13, 2010

Flower Cards

We weren’t in Seoul for long before Anjel’s family started teaching us how to play the traditional Korean card game of Min Hwa-Tu.

I’d seen the deck of small cards before, Anjel and I even had one around the house, but we had never played – until now. I am  hooked on it and Anjel’s Aunt (or “Emo”) has done a great job of slowly ratcheting up the difficulty of the game as we start to understand more and more. The biggest hurdle is just learning to keep all the sets straight… but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Fortune Cookie Game: For Once

by connal on January 13, 2010

This has nothing to do with travel, and we’re not in China, so I can’t pretend it was inspired by that. It was something that I was reminded of this evening, and it’s a meme that I try to pass along whenever I can. So I’m going to take this opportunity to do so.

Card Game: Khanquest

by connal on December 29, 2009

Playing

Most of the traditional Mongolian games of skill and chance are played with the ankle bones of sheep (and therefore difficult to recreate outside a ger). However we did learn a card game while staying with a nomadic family out on the Mongolian steppe and in our attempt to spread Mongol culture, we’ve included the rules below.

It’s a great game with a tricky strategy that definitely takes a few games to pick up. We’ve taught it to our family in South Korea and after 2 games to get the jist of it, they love it! This is definitely becoming a new family card came. :D

Little Help Here: Card Games

by connal on November 1, 2009

Anyone have any suggestions for good card games for travellers? We´ve started playing an ongoing game of Gin Rummy, which has been great, but I know there are other good games out there to help pass the time. Cumulative scoring games that can be played a hand or two here and there are great, but we´re open to anything. Also, games for 2 people would be best. Any suggestions?

You don´t need to include the rules (unless you made the game up) – we can probably google the title to find them.

Thanks!
