Moscow Subway Card

We’ve been collecting tickets from the various Subways, Metros, Trams and Buses we’ve been traveling on our trip.

It’s been interesting that most of the larger cities (Paris especially) have some of the least interesting and most disposable looking public transportation tickets while the small places (Tallinn, Ulan Bataar) seem to put as much design work into their bus passes as they do into their currency.

Flickr Set: Signs and Lettering

by connal on December 21, 2009

We’ve been photographing all sorts of billboards, road signs, tombstones, posters, and other things that have caught our eye as we’ve been traveling and thrown them into one big Flickr set that you can see here (there are a few samples in this post too).

The photos in the Flickr set are sorted by date, so the most recent are at the top of the page. Not all the photos have descriptions, but when you’re viewing an individual photo in Flickr, most of them will have tags that will at least say what country and possibly what city we were in.

In Photos: Tallinn, Estonia

by connal on November 25, 2009

Tallinn seems to have a couple of faces. On one hand, the city center is often compared to Disneyland – there are a number of Medieval restaurants complete with employees dressed in period costumes (however the buildings are genuine Medieval period construction). On the other hand, Estonia was occupied by both the Russians and the Nazis and once you get outside the Old Town city center, you start to see subtle (and not so subtle) traces of the Soviet influence and oppression.  On top of that, there’s a significant modern commercial presence throughout the city. These are just a few photos of the range of scenes you find in the city.
