*post ride note: The distance to the horizon at sea level is 3 miles. The distance to the horizon at 14,000 feet is 145 miles. The video also seems to get cut off near the end, but you’re not missing much.

While Anjel was volunteering at the Gabriel Foundation, I took a day to ride down to Pikes Peak, another one of Colorado’s over-14,000 ft summits, and home to the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (our second famous motorsport destination so far – Bonneville Speedway being the first). The race is held every July, but the rest of the year the road is open to visitor traffic. The road from the base of the mountain is about 19 miles and used to be paved only half way up, but there are now only about 4 miles of unpaved roads leading up to the summit.
Look up “Pikes Peak Hillclimb” on YouTube and you’ll find a huge number of videos to give you a taste of the race. The course is 12 miles long with 156 turns and the current record is just over 10 minutes. There are no guardrails on the course and most of the corners look like this (except they’re not all paved):

A leisurely weekend ride from Aurora to Red Rocks Amphitheatre, up Mt. Evans (at 14,220 feet the highest paved road in the U.S.), stopping in Idaho Springs for a Buffalo burger lunch followed by a quick stroll through downtown Boulder, and back home in time to catch an evening showing of the G.I. Joe movie with the cousins.

Our adventure began with us leaving Walnut Creek, California and heading northeast towards Sacramento with an ultimate destination of Aurora, Colorado – located just south of Denver. Because there’s no rush and no reason to spend our days riding the 8-lane slab of Highway 80, we looked for alternate routes – which quickly turned into a little history lesson on transportation in the US.
